Chainsaw…

Today we had to sacrifice about 25 trees to enable us to get power to our new house.  Both sides of our land are lined with fir, birch and poplar trees.  The fir trees and most of the birch are fine but the poplar are not good near power lines.  In high winds these are the ones that tend to go first.  They grow really fast and before you know it they are taking your power out with the slightest breeze – they are really bendy trees.

So, before our power poles can go in we had to remove the troublesome trees.  To do this we enlisted the help of 2 of our friends from the village, Jim and Barb (or Chainsaw Jim as we call him).  It took the four of us 3 hours to cut down, chop up, stack the log pile and clear all the remaining branches.  When Jim gets going with the chainsaw there is not much that can stop him.  He also knew exactly where they were going to fall, which was helpful given that Barb and I were darting in and out moving the branches to the back of the trees.  We did have a little help from a passing snake partway through – but he was too small to make a real impact.

Next step power poles.
