Oktoberfest

Each year on the last weekend in September Tatamagouche celebrates Oktoberfest.  Overnight the fronts of the shops on Main Street are transformed.  Another transformation is the rec centre in the village.  It is here that the Oktooberfest takes place.  In its normal state it is the local ice rink and sports hall, but over the course of a few days a group of volunteers transforms it with streamers, balloons and lights.  The seating around the edge of the rink area becomes a market place where you can buy hot dogs, local products and of course BEER.

They have 3 ‘sessions’ over 2 days for the celebration.  Nick and I helped out at the Friday night event.  It was a great atmosphere and everybody had a really good time.  We had a couple of visits from the local RCMP – just to make sure people were behaving themselves – and they had employed 5 security guards (the Saturday afternoon session can be quite a handful).

All told there were about 3000 people at the event from all over – we even had 4 visitors from Switzerland.  The Tatamagouche Oktoberfest is the second largest east of Ontario.

Labour Day Parade

The first Monday in September is Labour Day.  It is a public holiday in Canada.  In Tatamagouche (and most other areas in Canada) it is traditional to have a parade on this day.

At 12 o clock the parade started.  We had front row seats (outside the house we are now staying in) along with 2 Labrador puppies (Ebony and Rebel) that we were walking for a friend of ours.  The parade had floats from a lot of the local businesses as well as community groups, although the main presence was the fire brigade.  They came from all over the area in different engines to join in.
